Not So "Solid" Attempt

Miss Jane turned 6 months on Tuesday and our pediatrician suggested that we start with vegetables first (supposedly that is how the Europeans do it) and so I gave her peas. Below chronicles her foray into the world of food. Here she is staring it down
With trepidation
She tasted a bite and then for the next bite wanted to do it herself
Not too much escaped early on (only a little bit on her face)
And then some more came out
And then LOTS more
Finally, she just decided that it was better to just blow raspberries.
So, she actually ate the most on Day 1 of peas. Over the past few days, less and less had stayed in her mouth and more has ended up in her bib.Last night, Jane started to cry after only a few spoonfulls.  I was talking with my friend today about this issue and she thinks that I might need to water it down even more to start with because she might not be used to the texture yet and to ease into it a bit more. She also suggested doing very liquidy rice cereal with milk. Has anyone else had this problem? Any suggestions??

P.S. she looks so happy and smiling in the later photos but she wasn't all THAT happy eating- she just honestly LOVES the camera :-)

My Jane blew raspberries at me for the first month or so, too. I finally broke down and gave her fruit, and she loved it! You could try watering it down more, or maybe try sweet potatoes or squash. I don't really know.

I never bothered with special baby food -- I would just put whatever we were eating in the food mill and grind it up for the girls, that way they were used to the foods that we eat.

The girls first pediatrician said kids tend to like either the green foods like peas or the orange foods such as sweet potatoes, squash and carrots. She said if you look at a baby's nose, you can tell which one they prefer and lo and behold, my baby girl had a yellow/orange-ish tinge around the corners of her nose. Your little one may prefer these orange foods. My girls never really liked the green ones.

Just keep it up. There is a learning curve as well as taste to develop. It gets better.

Depending on if you are avoiding sweet foods or not, my babies loved the rice cereal made with apple juice. And they both LOVED carrots and sweet potatoes (Zac's favorite) and squash (Emma's favorite) and HATED anything green. I also never did the meats--they smell disgusting to me so I refused to force them on my babies. :) I also just fed them regular table food too. I didn't grind things up . . . I just cut them small and watched to make sure the babies didn't choke. Good luck. Real food is so messy. :)

Food trials with kids - we are still struggling with this one! Just keep trying - some kids like a food one week, and then hate it the next. Both my kids really loved squash and sweet potatoes, as well as all the fruit blends. We also did the cereals right at the beginning. I don't think there is one right way to do it - just keep offering different foods and you'll find something she likes. Noel had a horrible gag reflex until she was about 11 months old and would throw up anything that she didn't like. So - if Jane doesn't like it - don't push it. Because cleaning up throw up is about as glamorous as it sounds...

It just takes time for them to figure out eating. Just keep trying...also, by the time she is 18 months it is not going to matter what you fed her first. I think every kid just likes sweeter foods-sweet potatoes, carrots, etc. Good luck
