Cupcake Pop DISASTER

So I have been wanting to make these ADORABLE cupcake pops by Bakerella (who demonstrated these on Martha Stewart) for awhile and I finally decided to make them to bring to our Relief Society Enrichment meeting on Tuesday. I went and bought the special flower shaped cookie cutter to shape the cupcake bottoms as well as some Wilton candy melts and sprinkles to decorate them with.

The process seemed quite simple at first but as I actually got into it, it was much more involved than I had anticipated. You first bake the cake, let it cool, then mix it together with a can of frosting, shape into balls and put in the freezer. Then you use the flower cutter on the bottom half, return to the freezer and then dip in chocolate. Well, here's where things went awry for me- I over heated the chocolate melts in the microwave and so it didn't have the consistency to dip. By then, it was too late to finish them in time for RS. So I decided that I would finish them afterwards. I then dipped the tops first since the white chocolate was of the desired consistency (used a makeshift double boiler) and they looked pretty decent (well, not the best but ok).

Then, came the chocolate bottom part. For some reason, even with another batch of chocolate melts, the chocolate was NOT a good consistency. I tried dipping it in the chocolate and swirling it around and it only had the cake bottom start to come apart. Thus, I had to manually frost them with a knife but it just went super gloppy. I turned a couple of them into cupcake pops

But since they looked so bad, I decided NOT to waste any more sticks and I just left them as little mini cupcakes.

They look so pathetic- you know its bad when your husband says "Well they at least taste good." Yeah, THAT bad. I didn't have the specific dipping chocolate that she used but all I have to say is that I definitely did not have the artistic skills for this. It only makes me appreciate Bakerella's even more- and particularly ALL of the other ones she has done like Hello Kitty, Ghosts, Werewolves, Santa Hats, Puppies. Its a very involved process and since my results were less than desirable (I'm way too embarrassed to give them to anyone) it will definitely be awhile before I try them again (if ever).

Bakerella always has such cute ideas on her blog. I have considered making some of her ideas but keep convincing myself that I don't have her baking skills or (probably) her patience to get them to turn out.

They're calling them cake balls down here and they are all the rage! I think the "oreo" one was the best.

Every time that I have tried to dip stuff in chocolate it turns out like yours. I think that there is a trick to it that we don't know. Oh well, William is right, how they taste is more important anyway. :)

Hi Cheryl! Hope you don't mind me dropping in! I found Bakerella about a year ago and want with all of my heart to make those adorable pops. I have never been brave enough so hats off to you! A friend of ours makes them and calls them bon bons. She just dusts the cake ball in powdered sugar or rolls them in nuts or sprinkles. No dipping involved. But then you don't have the cute little cupcakes either...

I think you should try it again because they we very close!! Get some good quality dipping chocolate next time and see if that makes a difference. Then let us know!

Oh, how I know the feeling. My best husband comment ever was "and you spent a whole afternoon doing this?" [sigh] Oh well, someday I will present him with elegantly dipped confections of some kind and he will swoon in disbelief when I tell him that I, yes I made them (or so the fantasy goes) :)
